Week 4) July 14 – 18: Latin Rhythms & Dance with Teachers Matthew and Sergio

Latin Rhythms & Dance will be led by teachers Matthew Hernandez & Sergio Segura. This summer course will focus on popular music and rhythms of Latin America that have shaped our culture today. We will be specifically looking into popular rhythms of Cuba such as Son, Cha-Cha and Bolero and Colombia’s Cumbia amongst others. Our Cumbia course will be accompanied by dance. The bright colors of women’s dresses La Pollera Colora and the choreography working in conjunction with the maracas, tambor alegres, the llamador and the tambora Colombiana. This will be a two-part course offering lectures, the history of these genres and hands-on rhythm techniques with various percussion instruments.

itmos y Bailes Latinos será impartido por los profesores Matthew Hernandez y Sergio Segura. Este curso de verano se centrará en la música y los ritmos populares de Latinoamérica que han moldeado nuestra cultura actual. Nos centraremos específicamente en ritmos populares de Cuba como el son, el chachá y el bolero, así como en la cumbia colombiana, entre otros. Nuestro curso de cumbia estará acompañado de baile. Los brillantes colores de los vestidos de mujer, La Pollera Colorada, y la coreografía, que se complementa con las maracas, los tambores alegres, el llamador y la tambora colombiana, serán temas de dos partes que ofrecerán conferencias, la historia de estos géneros y técnicas rítmicas prácticas con diversos instrumentos de percusión.
