Since coming to the United States, Caster has appeared in numerous orchestras, including the American Youth Symphony, Orange County Symphony, Santa Monica Symphony, Quad City Symphony, Cedar Rapids Opera, and West Coast Chamber Orchestra. While in college, he was one of the finalists in the Maia Quartet competition and was awarded outstanding Pi Kappa Lambda award in 2007. Caster has performed with many professional ensembles, including the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, Brazilian Symphony Orchestra, National Orchestra of Malaysia, and the Kumamoto International Orchestra. During the summers, he has performed in many countries, including Brazil, Italy, Japan, Korea, Belgium, Taiwan, Australia, Thailand, and Canada. A doctoral graduate from the USC Thornton School of Music, Caster was inducted as a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society in 2007 and 2013. Caster is a much sought after teacher of trumpet. His students have won numerous music awards, and been admitted to acclaimed universities such as University of Michigan and Eastman School of Music. M., 2004), and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the USC Thornton School of Music (2012). He was faculty and Artist-In-Residence at University of La Verne (2015 - 2021), and currently holds teaching positions at El Camino College (where he also acts as Coordinator of the Applied Keyboard Area), and Neighborhood Music School in Los Angeles (where he also acts as Director of Programs and Evaluation). Much sought as a performer, collaborative, and recording artist, he has performed for various concert series throughout Southern California, and worked in studio recordings for soundtracks of short movies and documentaries. An advocate of contemporary music, Dr. Liebich actively pursues embracing diversity in his performances as well as in his pedagogical practice. He is a member of the International Society for Music Education, and his scholarly work includes publications in music analysis, music education and sociology, and music interpretation and aesthetics. From USC Thornton School of Music he received honors such as the Keyboard Ensemble Award, the Keyboard Studies Department Award, as well as induction into the Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honors Society. He first picked up the saxophone when he was 13 years old at El Sereno Middle School and through Neighborhood Music School, he studied saxophone and jazz theory privately with several teaching artists, but most notably saxophonist Joe Santamaria and guitarist Balam Garcia. He also studied composition in a private setting with Professors Trevor Anderies and Kevin Kelly of the Herb Alpert Music Center in Los Angeles. Matthew has had the honor to share the stage and learn from many distinct artists and music educators such as Arturo Sandoval, Oscar Hernandez, Eddie Resto, Luis Conte, Germaine Franco, Euro Zambrano, Justo Almario, David Urquidi, George Shelby, Jose “Perico” Hernandez, Kevin Ricard, Dr. JB Dyas, Dr. Rafael Liebich, Kassandra Kocoshis, Aaron Serfaty, Chamo Saurez, Brain Carmody, Tony White, Dr. Milen Kirov, Carlos Eduardo Verde Jr., and Joey de Leon. Within his time at Neighborhood Music School, his role resembles a sort of metamorphosis, as he began as a student in 2016. He was reintroduced to the school as the Program Intern in 2020, and then again in 2021 within his current administrative role of Scheduler. Since June of 2022, he began working as a Teaching Artist with varying teaching assignments. Through Neighborhood Music School, he has also provided community enrichment programming at Puente Charter Elementary School, and Art in the Park LA. leading the Art in the Park Latin Jazz Band. Additionally, Matthew has performed masterclasses and special presentations around Latin music and dance for the Cochlear Implant Music Hour Lab of USC Keck Medicine and other educational institutions around Los Angeles on his own time. Matthew has also been featured on the recordings of “Para Ti” and “Mueven Bien” by Timba Tumbao. Since becoming the music director for Timba Tumbao in 2020, Matthew has helped establish the band’s identity as one of the top performing salsa cover groups in Southern California. He also founded his own latin jazz quartet last year in 2024 named Latin Mantra Project. As the General Manager of Loews Hollywood Hotel, Gorelick brings proven results and strong leadership to his new role. During his nearly 40-year tenure with Marriott, he held various positions including General Manager for J.W. Marriott San Francisco Union Square and General Manager for the Renaissance Hollywood. Gorelick was most recently the General Manager of the Ritz Carlton, San Francisco. Gorelick was President of San Francisco's Hotel Association and was on The Executive Committee of S.F Travel as well as chairing The Tourism Council for S.F. Travel and a member of The Sales and Marketing Committee and Public Affairs Committee. Outside of the hotel, Bruce enjoys spending time with his wife, Sara, and their four daughters. Alex Lalin has worked at Adventist Health White Memorial since 2003. During his career at the hospital, he has served as Minister Of Music, responsible for creating a healing environment for the patients and our east LA community. Alex also serves as a liaison between the hospital, and Neighborhood Music School, LA Opera, Los Angeles Children's Choir, and the San Gabriel Academy Chorale, among other community partners. Alex worked as a Children's Director at Saddleback church since 2018. Alex's passion is serving our community through medical missions worldwide, including in the Philippines, China, Africa, and Mexico. As a professor at the Torrey Honors Institute, he also teaches the classics, the knowledge of which he employs to explore the intellectual influences on important American thinkers, writers and historical developments. He is most interested in the ways that American territorial expansion and frontier mythology shape antebellum writing and national identity. Looking far beyond traditional frontier themes in literature, his research on the influence of the West on American narrative has forged links between such disparate subjects as Nat Turner, Herman Melville, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Ralph Ellison, Quentin Tarantino and Toni Morrison. The relationship between the South and the West is of particular interest to him. He pays attention to the historical interdependence of these two regions of the country, but also to the curious western trek of minstrelsy and other lampoons of southern life and culture to Hollywood. As an accomplished alto saxophonist, he explores the relationship between music and thought. In particular, he is interested in the ways that jazz exposes a rich intellectual tradition and both parallels and informs literary production. Understanding jazz to be a way of thinking and not merely an artistic style, he employs his creative acumen to exploit the inherent musical quality of oral communication. As a public speaker, he is attuned to the same performance dynamics as an artist. His saxophone sensibilities equip him as an orator to improvise and compose words in ways that mimic musical and theatrical nuances. Through animated, humorous, thought-provoking and explosive on stage, Dr. Smith, like many academics, is an introvert in an extrovert’s world. He’s learned how to turn the social awkward into social empowerment. The life lessons he’s picked up along the way have translated into compelling talks on leadership and emotional intelligence. After receiving his undergraduate degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he earned a Ph.D. in music theory from Yale University. He is currently a member of the music theory faculty of the Colburn Conservatory. He was a longtime member of the music faculty at Occidental College and has also been a visiting professor at UCLA and UC Santa Barbara. Well known as a pre-concert lecturer, Dr. Chapman has been a regular speaker on the L.A. Philharmonic’s “Upbeat Live” series since its inception in 1984. He also works closely with the Los Angeles Master Chorale and Pacific Symphony. He has been heard globally as programmer and host of the inflight classical channels on United and Delta Airlines. Dr. Chapman is also active as a composer/lyricist. His songs have been performed and recorded by many artists around the world and have been honored by ASCAP, the Johnny Mercer Foundation, and the Manhattan Association of Cabarets. He is much in demand as a creator of original musical material for special events. He frequently appears in cabaret evenings with his wife, soprano Karen Benjamin. He later became a successful theatrical agent with clients in the original casts of countless Broadway musicals in the years from A Chorus Line to Cats, representing Tony Award winners and future Hollywood stars. He returned home to Los Angeles for an equally successful time as a casting director for stage and television before turning his talents to producing and directing. I am thrilled, honored and humbled to serve as Executive Director of Neighborhood Music School and to be part of this artistic anchor and home in the Boyle Heights community. As a child, music- and the process of building music- was integral to my discovery, play, problem solving and comprehension. As a teenager, music took on another role as a mentor, a destination, a community, and a directional guide through endless challenges and opportunities. As a teaching and performing artist, music became an incredible tool for storytelling and identity. As I continue to grow, so do the awareness and appreciation of the massive power that the arts- and music in particular- have on all of us, all of the time. With an undergraduate degree in Theatre from the College of Wooster, a M.A. in Interdisciplinary Arts from Columbia College, Chicago, and a M.A. in Nonprofit Management from Antioch University, Los Angeles, I have worked as an actor (who sang often, if not well), arts administrator and teaching artist, teaching and performing on stages and in classrooms in New York City, Memphis, Chicago and many other places along the way. Since establishing my home in Los Angeles, I have built a path that includes arts administration, development and advocacy through my work as Executive Director of the LACHSA Foundation, raising funds for the arts programs at Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, as Deputy Director of Arts for LA. I currently serve of the Board of the Boyle Heights Chamber of Commerce and LA Dance Chronicle. I recognize that the nexus of creative development fuels all other development: personal, communal, societal, universal. Her work as an administrator and artist has earned her numerous distinguished accolades recognizing her leadership in education. She was flown to Washington D.C. to receive the National Crystal Apple Distinguished Educator Award. She is the recipient of numerous awards/ grants from community and educational organizations. These include: the Michael Jordan Foundation, the Southern Poverty Law Center, the Surdna Arts Foundation, the CSULA Principal Residence Network, the American High School Theatre Festival, the California Arts Council, and the Confucius Institute. As a distinguished administrator from the United States, Ms. Sherman-Colt earned a fellowship through the Chinese Bridge Delegation and travelled to China to tour schools and meet with Chinese educators and administrators. Ms. Sherman-Colt was a member of an educational /arts panel for National Public Radio and has been selected to speak at educational conferences throughout the country. In addition, as a professional dance educator she choreographed and directed numerous ballets that have premiered throughout the United States and abroad. Presently, Mrs. Sherman-Colt serves as the Director of Operations and Administration at the Neighborhood Music School in Los Angeles. Previously, Ms. Sherman-Colt served as Chief Program Officer of the Cayton Children’s Museum, Executive Director of Oakland School for the Arts, Interim & Assistant Principal of Los Angeles County High School for the Arts and Artistic Director of Milwaukee High School for the Arts. Through her tenure, she earned two graduate degrees: M.S. in Educational Leadership and a M.F.A. in Dance Performance / Choreography. In addition, she earned two bachelor’s degrees: B.S. Dance Education and B.S. Dance Performance/ Choreography. M., 2004), and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the USC Thornton School of Music (2012). He was faculty and Artist-In-Residence at University of La Verne (2015 - 2021), and currently holds teaching positions at El Camino College (where he also acts as Coordinator of the Applied Keyboard Area), and Neighborhood Music School in Los Angeles (where he also acts as Director of Programs and Evaluation). Much sought as a performer, collaborative, and recording artist, he has performed for various concert series throughout Southern California, and worked in studio recordings for soundtracks of short movies and documentaries. An advocate of contemporary music, Dr. Liebich actively pursues embracing diversity in his performances as well as in his pedagogical practice. He is a member of the International Society for Music Education, and his scholarly work includes publications in music analysis, music education and sociology, and music interpretation and aesthetics. From USC Thornton School of Music he received honors such as the Keyboard Ensemble Award, the Keyboard Studies Department Award, as well as induction into the Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honors Society. Her second feature story, in 2011, was about our school. She spent the next year and a half taking lessons here at NMS, and has remained a faithful volunteer until joining the staff, first as an LA County Intern focused on bringing summer programming to NMS. He first picked up the saxophone when he was 13 years old at El Sereno Middle School and through Neighborhood Music School, he studied saxophone and jazz theory privately with several teaching artists, but most notably saxophonist Joe Santamaria and guitarist Balam Garcia. He also studied composition in a private setting with Professors Trevor Anderies and Kevin Kelly of the Herb Alpert Music Center in Los Angeles. Matthew has had the honor to share the stage and learn from many distinct artists and music educators such as Arturo Sandoval, Oscar Hernandez, Eddie Resto, Luis Conte, Germaine Franco, Euro Zambrano, Justo Almario, David Urquidi, George Shelby, Jose “Perico” Hernandez, Kevin Ricard, Dr. JB Dyas, Dr. Rafael Liebich, Kassandra Kocoshis, Aaron Serfaty, Chamo Saurez, Brain Carmody, Tony White, Dr. Milen Kirov, Carlos Eduardo Verde Jr., and Joey de Leon. Within his time at Neighborhood Music School, his role resembles a sort of metamorphosis, as he began as a student in 2016. He was reintroduced to the school as the Program Intern in 2020, and then again in 2021 within his current administrative role of Scheduler. Since June of 2022, he began working as a Teaching Artist with varying teaching assignments. Through Neighborhood Music School, he has also provided community enrichment programming at Puente Charter Elementary School, and Art in the Park LA. leading the Art in the Park Latin Jazz Band. Additionally, Matthew has performed masterclasses and special presentations around Latin music and dance for the Cochlear Implant Music Hour Lab of USC Keck Medicine and other educational institutions around Los Angeles on his own time. Matthew has also been featured on the recordings of “Para Ti” and “Mueven Bien” by Timba Tumbao. Since becoming the music director for Timba Tumbao in 2020, Matthew has helped establish the band’s identity as one of the top performing salsa cover groups in Southern California. He also founded his own latin jazz quartet last year in 2024 named Latin Mantra Project. The Neighborhood Music School Teaching Faculty is proud of the exciting careers in music each of our faculty have built! We took some time to talk to David Castillo, Vocal Faculty, and leader of the Youth Coro, about his projects and inspirations! What do you teach at NMS and how long have you been teaching your instrument? I have been teaching voice since 2010 and, since 2022, I have been teaching voice at Neighborhood Music School. In early August, we created a new vocal group called the Coro and they have working on and performing music of many different genres. We started with around 2 people and now we have a very strong group of 7-8 singers. We keep growing, and it's exciting. Come join us! We’re still trying to figure out a great band name, feel free to send your suggestions. How did you get started? My family kept many photos and videos of baby David sitting in front the TV with a guitar and mic stand (I made from a shoebox and a wrapping paper rolls) singing along to Raffi videos. I think my parents put me in piano lessons in Kindergarten and I switched to violin in first grade. I am from New Orleans and I am very fortunate to have an aunt who is a music director at a local high school. She let me borrow any instrument I wanted to learn. I picked up the Alto Saxophone and Trumpet in second grade and decided to stick with the Trumpet through senior year of high school playing in the marching and jazz bands. When I was in 2nd grade, my aunt also recommended I join the new boy choir her colleague was forming.That’s where I started my formal voice training. We toured all over and even sang for Pope John Paul II in the Vatican. After that, I did musicals in middle school and high school. What motivates you now? What motivates me every day are really great environments to make really great art with really great humans. In the past several years, that has been an important realization and foundational approach to have the enjoyable and sustainable career I am grateful to have. Where has music led you? Anywhere unexpected? Music has led me to many incredibly unexpected and wonderful places. I guess I thought I would have a career singing very traditional opera right out grad school, but the journey has taken me to every other avenue. That has been exciting. I’ve sung in Paris, Italy, New Orleans, and New York (Lincoln Center and Off-Broadway). In LA, I have sung as a soloist at Disney Hall with the LA Phil and Dudamel and with the LA Master Chorale and Grant Gershon. I have been a professional ensemble singer with the Master Chorale since 2013, which made that boychoir start come full circle. I also didn’t know music would take me into the Hollywood worlds and I have sung on some really great movies, video games, and shows such as Encanto, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, and America’s Got Talent. What are you most proud of that you bring to your students? I am proud of my rather unconventional teaching style. I am fortunate to have experience working in so many fields of music, production, and acting and to have had incredible guidance from coaches and teachers in all those areas. I do my best to distill all that info into a practical and adventurous approach to voice. We are all completely different humans, which means we all have completely different voices. And, since we’re human, our bodies and voices constantly are changing. I think that is the coolest part of singing. I’m all about taking the time to devote constant exploration to discover what an individual or group’s “superpower” may be. Once we begin to understand them, I think it is important to lean into that and celebrate them. What are your words of advice for current students or potential students? Keep it fun, keep exploring! What do you have coming next? It’s an exciting November. I’m singing on the new Black Panther: Wakanda Forever out in theatres November 11. On Tuesday, November 29, I singing at Carnegie Hall performing the role of Jim in Eric Whitacre’s Christmas opera The Gift of the Magi. We debuted this piece in December 2019 with the LA Master Chorale and he wrote a new extended edition we will premiere in New York. Will share more, when able! What is your favorite quote/piece of music/object of inspiration? “Breathe and Tell a Story.” My teacher Phil always would say that in our lessons. Learning and performing music can feel so technical and complicated and chaotic, this phrase simplifies everything and gives purpose for doing what we do. Favorite piece of music…hard to say just one! I constantly have The Marsalis Family, M.I.A., G Yamazawa, Vacación, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Paco de Lucía, Wayne Shorter, esperanza spalding, or Jamiroquai playing. I’m all over the place. Favorite object of inspiration would have to be the entire Chef’s Table body of work on Netflix. Each chef’s story is a masterclass in process and ownership of self. I probably watched all the seasons over a dozen times.
