In 2017, we began offering eight weeks of summer programming, in addition to our regular schedule of private lessons and classes. Summer music programs and camps often cost hundreds, or even thousands of dollars to attend, but we offer every summer class at a rate of $5 per session. It is our priority to offer affordable summer programing to ensure that every student in our community was able to participate, regardless of financial circumstances.
Our Summer Music Programs take place over an eight-week period between June and August, from Monday through Thursday between 10:00am – 1:00pm. Each student can participate in up to three 45-minute sessions per day, at 10:00am, 11:00am, and 12:00pm. We have offered dozens of classes that cover a wide variety of musical subjects: Introductory classes for piano, violin, guitar, and drums; a chamber music intensive; jazz standards; musical theatre; anatomy and breathing for vocalists; world styles of guitar; early childhood music and movement; electronic music and sound synthesis; learning to sing harmony; a pop vocal class; and “Instruments that Sound Like Animals,” which was a fun favorite for our youngest students. At the end of the eight-week session, we host a Student Summer Showcase where our students demonstrate what they have learned over the course of the summer.
In addition to these summer classes and workshops, we offer “Field Trip Fridays” and special events on Saturdays. In line with our mission, we believe that it is a priority for our students and families to be able to easily access professional performances and cultural opportunities, regardless of economic circumstances. It can be prohibitively expensive to experience our city’s artistic offerings. We help our students access the arts in ways that would be otherwise unavailable to them. On Saturdays, we hold movie nights, student recitals, and special Concerts in the Parlor, which are free, public concerts that feature our Teaching Artist.
